I really wanted this to be a thing.
This would have been better. Luna is actually a character who is designed to be something more than a love interest for the hero, unlike the unhappy lot of Ginny Weasley.
Ginny is only of interest narratively because she comes complete with a large, rowdy family. Ginny “Harry’s future wife” doesn’t serve the purpose giving our hero a grand love story. Harry does not have a love story in these books. Ginny is only present as Harry’s ticket into a family, and lets Harry become a relative of his best friends. Ginny allows Harry to go from no family at all to more family than anyone could ever ask for. That is her sole true contribution. It’s really sad.
I thought at the time, and I will continue to believe, that someone who was possessed by Tom Riddle and wrote threats on the walls in chicken’s blood would inevitably become a goth. Someone who is the youngest of seven red-headed children, and the only girl, would inevitably dye her hair black and paint her nails to match. She would put dark makeup around her eyes and write angsty poetry about how no one understands her pain.
I still think this is the only logical characterization for Ginny the teenager. At least she would have been more interesting.
I say this as a Harry Potter fan, of course. Only a fan would be this invested.
With the books turning out as they did, I wanted future Neville/Luna, but after book five, and midway through book six, I would’ve been thrilled had Harry/Luna actually happened. They would’ve been good for each other.
